Nora's Note

Collaboration for climate resilient communities. The North/West Battery Park City Resiliency Project Workshops launched a series of four hands-on workshops last week to collect community feedback on specific geographic portions ("reaches") of the project area. The project aims to protect Battery Park City and residents of lower Manhattan from risks associated with climate-change related storm surge and sea level rise, a mounting challenge with the increase in the severity of storms along the east coast. Each workshop focuses on just two reaches with participants working in small groups to review design options, comment, and report back their key findings. Join this week's session, covering Tribeca and North Esplanade because every voice counts in planning a resilient future for all.

Transportation

NYC’s Department of Transportation is expanding its on-street carshare program. The first 80 curbside parking spaces will be installed in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx with the goal of installing hundreds more this year. The DOT deemed the pilot program a success reporting that it reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 7%, and vehicle miles traveled 6%. Research done through customer surveys determined that for every one car shared vehicle, four personal vehicles were either not purchased or sold. Carshare users took 160,000 trips during the length of the pilot, with an average of 24 trips per month, per space. Read more to learn about the DOT’s upcoming adaptations. (Source: Gothamist)

The global demand for renewable energy is projected to be fulfilled in the next three years. The world continues to shift towards clean energy, and the fight against climate change is shaping humanity’s need for low-emission sources of electricity. The International Energy Agency released a report outlining the global consumption of electricity and how fossil fuels will reach their tipping point, only for renewable energy sources to take over and meet more than 90% of renewable energy demand. Pittsburgh office-to-residential conversion fund begins to accept bids. A redevelopment agency in Pittsburgh is attempting to combat the housing and affordability crisis by converting unused offices into residential space. The program will provide aid to many who work in downtown Pittsburgh but are unable to afford rent in the area. The plan is supplemented by $2.1 million in funding from the American Rescue Plan and is accepting proposals on a rolling basis.
