Building New York’s supply chain. Equinor Renewables US held its second of three Supply Chain Expos this week at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City and announced the appointment of a construction manager for the planned Offshore Wind Hub in the former South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. The site will serve as an industry-leading offshore wind port for the Empire Wind and Beacon Wind projects, planned to bring renewable energy to over 1 million NY homes. The expo featured panels on building the supply chain and workforce development for offshore wind and one-on-one matchmaking sessions which directly connected local and regional businesses to Equinor and its key business partners. Investment in local supply chain development and the retrofitting of key sites such as the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal are critical steps in delivering on NY’s nation-leading climate goals with economic development and equity at the forefront.
Transportation
US DOT launches roadway safety call to action. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg recently announced the national campaign in support of the DOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy. Nearly 50 government, non-profit and private sector partners have signed on to the campaign, committing to reducing deaths and injuries caused by roadway accidents and dangerous driving. The announcement comes just days after $800M in funding was announced for street safety programs across the country. Bronx residents got rid of gas stoves, revealing marked improvement in air quality. An environmental nonprofit recently released a 10-month study unveiling a significant decrease in pollutants in the air tested from apartments with electric stoves when compared to those with gas stoves. The study, conducted in New York City Housing Authority buildings in the Bronx, revealed significant health improvements for residents in neighborhoods known for high levels of air pollution. Economic Development
Clean energy is cheaper than coal across the whole US, prompting investment in workforce development. A recent study indicated that replacing coal plants with renewable energy would economically benefit both consumers and communities affected by the declining coal economy. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) recently announced $4 million in grants to support business growth and workforce development efforts in West Virginia communities impacted by a decline in the coal economy.
